Hello Darling;

Well dear I have just finished reading your last letter and was very glad to receive it. It is just 1 o’clock on Sunday afternoon and I am writing this while I am sitting on my bunk, so please excuse the writing dear.
I didn’t want to say anything to you about our move until we knew definitely where and when we were going and even though we don’t get our leave at Christmas or New Years they say we will get it in January. They say in the paper that it will more than likely be Moncton, but I have an idea that it might be a little farther west so keep you fingers crossed darling.
I went shopping yesterday dear with 4 or 5 of the boys and I bought exactly nothing so it wasn’t a very profitable afternoon was it? You can renew my subscription for the Star dear, for a month anyway, and even if we move they will forward it on to me.
I am glad to hear that you are feeling so well dear, the fellow I was working with, his wife is expecting a baby on the 16th of January or so and she only weighs about 103 lbs. or so and she isn’t as big as you. So I am really proud of you dear and I can’t wait until I get home with you.
I bet you look pretty luxurious in that new night gown darling, boy when I just think of it (naughty naughty) and I love you so very much I don’t think you will be safe when I am home, but then who wants to be safe eh dear? I know I don’t.
I went to the show Wednesday night and saw Paulette Goddard in something or other. Thursday night I went up to our club and played cards with the boys all night. Friday night I saw “Crystal Ball” with Paulette Goddard again. Last night I was asked to work in the canteen so I had a very quiet evening. I had to keep an eye on the boys and to make sure that they behaved themselves.
I went to church this morning and as I do not feel like going downtown to the show tonight, I am going to be the one at the station. Lloyd Waters got out of the hospital yesterday and he feels fine.
I really don’t know what you could get my folks. I think that a shirt and tie would be just the thing, you could see Roy Duffat at Eaton’s to pick it out for you as he knows what he would like and I think he knows you doesn’t he dear? Excuse me dear but the radio is just playing some Scotch songs and one of the boys just mentioned that Scotch girls are the hottest women of them all. I didn’t say anything but boy I really agree with him!
Well let me see, would a nice sweater be OK for my Mom or a make up kit and a pair of gloves. I’ll leave it up to you dear.

Hello Darling;

Well dear here I am again, it is Wednesday afternoon and as things are a little on the quiet side I thought I would drop you a few lines. Received your last letter yesterday dear and was very glad to hear from you.
Things are just about the same as when I last wrote you dear. I have not done anything exciting. Sunday night I went to the station show and saw real old fashion cowboy picture with lots of “shootin'” so I didn’t mind that. Monday night I went tot he show and saw some second rate picture. Last night Norm and I saw the Air Force show and it was really OK, confidentially though I think some of the girls used to be on the Casino Stage but everybody seemed to enjoy it.
Well darling it is only a month tomorrow until Christmas, that is only 4 weeks, boy that isn’t very long is it dear and nobody is looking forward to it more than I am dear, boy do I ever love you an awful lot babe, what power is it you have over me dear. I guess it is because you are my wife.
Darling, I don’t want to damper your feelings about my leave dear but I think that something might be coming up to cancel it. I haven’t heard anything definite about it as yet but there is definitely something in the wind, but you know dear you never can tell whats going to happen so we’ll just keep our fingers crossed. At any rate dear I still have those 4 days coming to me so I’ll probably get home right after New Years, however dear don’t do anything until you hear further form me and that should be within the next week anyway.
Well lets talk about something a little more pleasant. I’m glad you are taking real good acre of yourself darling. They are certainly serving dandy sundaes here now dear almost as good as those ones we used to get at Rice’s. I certainly get a little homesick when I look at the shows on Danforth in the paper. Oh well dear we’ll be looking at them together someday and deciding what show we’ll take in that night.
I had a long talk with Norman Hall and he knows you and Marg, he didn’t know that Marg and Ted were married. He thought I was pretty lucky to be in Canada so that I could get home to you once and a while. He just got married you know and I rather think that he wants fussy about going overseas right away.
Oh did you see int he paper where Allan Payton had been killed overseas? I had cut out the article but it is down in my locker so I cannot enclose it within this letter. You met him when you were down here dear and he used to live on Laird Ave, boy, it didn’t take him long to get his.
How are you making out with our shopping dear? Have you got anything for your folks and my Mom and Pop? I really don’t know what they need but I will leave it up to you.
Darling, I’m a bit worried about you working. I think in fact I want you to just quit right after you see the doctor on the 6th. Darling there is no use taking a chance is there, just for a couple of weeks extra pay. It is not worth it particularly at Christmas when we are so busy. So darling I really want you to quit in a couple of weeks so won’t you please? You will be 5 months by the 6th of next month and I think that you’ll feel like resting yourself.

Hello dear

Well dear, how have you been keeping? I hope that you have been behaving yourself down there and you have not been eating all those sundaes every night or I will not know you when I see you darling.
I have been feeling very well this last week and I think that if everything goes right that I will continue to put weight on dear and that is a good thing. I weighed myself and I am 115 lbs dear and boy I do not think that I have ever been that heavy and if I continue to put on weight I might not be able to fit into my Christmas dress which means dear that I will have to go shopping to make sure that I have something nice to wear when I see you in just 4 weeks.
Last night I went to the show with Irene and we saw a double feature, but they were not very good. We decided to walk home and as the night was rather brisk I am glad that I had my winter coat on dear but I could hardly do the buttons up as my waist has certainly expanded.
It is so nice to hear that you have my picture pinned up in your locker dear and that you think of me in the morning and when you get yourself ready for bed in the evening. I only wish that I was there in person to help tuck you in (ha ha).
I think that you would have many different kind of fellows down there in your barracks and hearing about the french kid and all the trouble he is getting into makes me think darling what are you really up to besides eating sundaes and writing letters to me. Have you learned anything from the French kid, and is he teaching all you boys a thing or two about how not to treat the women of Halifax. I can only imagine what goes on there with all you boys, carrying on about all your antics, it can drive a person mad if they think about it.
You have been attending a few boxing and wrestling matches later eh? I am not sure that I would enjoy watching two people punch and throw each other around in a ring, but then you said that you were actually taking practice classes at night. Bill dear what do you think you are going to do to me when I finally see you? I hope that you are keeping that imagination in check as I think I might be in for a heap of trouble.
I know you are getting the paper down here dear but I am wondering what you would like me to do about the subscription as I think it is coming up for renewal. I can take care of it up here dear but can you please just let me know.
I am still planning on you coming down here for your leave at New Year’s, even though I am a little disappointed about you not being here for Christmas at least I think and hope that you will be here for New Years and we will be able to spend some time together just you and me. Speaking of Christmas I think that it is time that we start our Christmas shopping and I will need to get a few presents out of the way so thatI am not rushing around closer to the holidays. I think that I will get a baby doll for Beverley and then you can let me know what you are thinking about getting your folks and I will see if I can get my discount again at Eaton’s.
Right now I am listening to the radio and they are playing slow songs that you can dance to and I think that there will be nothing nicer dear than having you at home and us dancing together as the snow falls. Wouldn’t that just be lovely dear.

Hello darling;

Well dear here it is Saturday afternoon and I have just awoke from a very nice 2 hour sleep. Things are pretty quite in the barracks right now. Norm, Paul and 3 or 4 other lads are downtown doing their Christmas shopping and the other boys are all sleeping, my radio is just playing a solid hour of swing.
The lad that sleeps opposite of me has just returned from temporary duty at Windsor Ont. He was telling me how cold it was up there. I haven’t even started to wear my good coat down here yet but we had a late fall own here as you know.
I received your letter today and boy you really will be Miss America by the time I get home but to me darling you always have been and I just can’t wait until the end of next month but the time is certainly slipping by. Lloyd Waters is in the hospital as he has a slight concussion. He was fooling around with a fellow and got a kick behind his ear, it isn’t very serious though and he should be out in a week or two. I dont know how he will be bale to tell his wife though, if I was him I wouldn’t because she would just worry over it.
I have not been doing very much as usual. Wednesday night I went to the station show, Thursday night I went and saw our boxing and wrestling show and it was very good. Friday night they had 2 pictures on the station show they weren’t to bad. Tonight is dance night but I don’t think that I will be going. I think I will take in a show downtown for a change. I haven’t been to a show on Saturday night for quite a while.
So you know Robert Coote, the actor, he arrived on the station this morning, he was in that picture “Forever and a Day” he was the blind soldier who was boarding at the house during the last war. I was talking to him this morning and he didn’t seem to be too bad of a guy.
I forgot to mention that I am doing a little wrestling and boxing at nights after the show, just to get me in shape for comping home, so you had better watch out darling as I will be raring to go. Gee but I sure miss you darling and do I ever love you. I have your picture pinned right up in my locker because darling you are my one and only pin-up girl.
We have a little French kid of 17.5 with us and he really is a funny little lad. The joke of it is that he has more women phone him then any other guy in the barracks. We all want to know what his secret is, but you know these French boys and you know what these Halifax girls want so what do you think it is?
Darn it, but I am sorry about those underwear dear, I’ve been trying to get it away but I will next week for sure. No I have not told the boys yet, I am going to wait until I come back after its over and hand out cigars, it will be more fun to watch the expressions on their faces. Well dear you are just a bout 1/2 way along now and if the next 4 1/2 months go as fast it won’t be long dear and who knows the darn war might be over by then. I don’t mind the life too much dear as long as I have someone as sweet and true as you to come home to and a little daughter besides you know dear they say it takes a good man to have a daughter, so we” have to see if I am or not. I’m particularly glad to see in your letter that first measurement of 35″, boy you shouldn’t have told me that. I won’t sleep at nights now knowing what is in store for me on my leave oh boy!

Hello Darling;

Well I have just finished reading your last letter dear and as usual I am going to answering it right away.
I have just finished a chicken dinner and it certainly is tiresome getting chicken so often, it will be nice to get back to beefsteak and veal cutlets, won’t it be great though when I come home at nights for supper and have it in our own little place with nobody to bother us and then have my Mother and Pop over to watch the children while we go out for an evening but I could have just as much fun staying home every evening with you dear.
One of the boys I chum around with who is from Toronto is expecting a family in the middle of January. His wife is smaller than you are dear so I wouldn’t worry about that and the drummers wife is quite a bit smaller too. I am quite glad to hear that you are feeling well and I know that Mom Booth is seeing that you get the right food, my we should have a superman for a son or a daughter.
Well they asked us when we wanted our leave and I’m lined up for New Years. I think that I’ll get it but you never can count on anything.
I hear that Bert Niosi won’t be down at the Palais anymore, it seems they asked for more money and they wouldn’t give it to them so they went up and quit. It won’t seem the same down there anymore, will it dear? We’ve had a lot of good times down here haven’t we and you can bet we’ll have lots more.
I have not been doing much darling. Sunday night I saw the station show, it was a “Flacon” picture and Monday night I saw that musical picture with all the stars in it, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, it was really good and it is coming to the Capital next week.
Poor old Bert and his wife are looking for another place and I think I forgot tot ell you dear do you remember when they thought they were getting that place for $13 a month. Well it was $13 dollars a week that they are paying for now and she gets her meals for an extra $8 a month, so I guess that we didn’t do too bad when you were down here eh dear?
I didn’t go anywhere to do anything last night except for my nightly sundae and glass of milk and then I came back to the barracks and did a little reading. Tonight I am going to the station show and tomorrow night they are having a boxing and wrestling show that is something that you and I will have to see dear.
Tell my Mom and Pop to get cracking and send me a letter, but I guess that there is one no the way by now.
You can give me Doris’ address dear and any others that you think I should send cards to. I have about 4 or so that I won’t be able to use so let me know dear.

Hello Bill Darling;

Well is it is dear Tuesday evening and I have just finished up my supper and I have come upstairs to get away form all the noise as Mom and Pop have a few of their friends over and you know what it can get like when they get into remembering stories and such. So I thought I would write you a nice long letter seeing as I have lots to tell you.
Bill darling I am sorry that I have not been writing as much as I used to but I am just so darn tired when I get home from work. I have to help get supper ready and make sure Beverley is taken care of as Mom is so tired that she often needs a sleep while I am preparing supper. Then Pop comes in and wants to talk about his day so by the time I am all done I am just about tired out.
I am glad to hear that your folks have been spending some time writing you a few letters. I was over to see them on the weekend and they were saying how much they enjoy getting your letters and then I let them know that you enjoyed getting theirs letters just as much so i guess that they have taken that to heart and wrote a few lines to you.
Saturday night I went over to Doris’ as I have not seen her in such a long time and we had a lovely talk and she gave me a lovely surprise as she had put sewn a lovely outfit for the baby. I was so happy to get it as this was my first gift for the baby.
My next medical appointment dear is on the the 6th of December so I am hoping after that I will make my decision on what I am going to do about work. I have not made the final decision on when I should be stopping work dear but I am thinking sometime before the Christmas rush would be best. Oh by the way I should let you know that I have been taking my measurements and there is a certain part of my body which is now up to 35″ and I will let you guess which part I am talking about dear, and I am sure that you will be excited to see when you come home for your holidays.
I am glad that you enjoyed the pictures that I sent down to you dear and that you have taken such good care of them as you have put them up in your locker. Darling, I think that Nan looks lovely the way she is even if she has filled out in certain areas after being married but everyone is different and we all cannot look like Miss America.
It is so nice to hear that you have been going to church service on Sundays dear and that you are enjoying the sermons as much as you are. I have not been to church in some time as there never seems to be enough hours in the day when I am working full time and going out int he evenings to the show or stopping in to see your folks or looking after Beverley. But all of this I do not mind as it keeps me busy and keep my mind off of thinking of you dear and I do that an awful lot if I am being honest with myself.
Darling, have you told the boys yet about the exciting news that you are going to be a father? Are they excited and do you think that they will do something special for you? I am thinking that your Mom or my Mother will have a baby shower for me but I think hat might happen some time int he new year as I think everyone is busy getting ready for the holidays.
The weather has turned cold here dear and the house is so awfully cold. I am sitting here writing you this letter form under a blanket and darling, I can think of so many ways in which you could keep me warm but I think that I am going to leave that up to your imagination, and I know you have quite the imagination dear.
Ted is certainly lucky indeed that he will be posted so close to home and that he will have a chance to come back down to Toronto when he gets his leave. Some guys as you say have all the luck but darling, I am the lucky one who gets to be married to such a loving and caring husband and dear we are truly lucky to have one another.

Hi Darling;

Well here it is Monday afternoon dear and as I am going to a show on the station at 6 o’clock I thought I would get your letter away before I went. The picture “This is the Army” is on at the capital tonight but they had run out of tickets before I got there so I won’t be going off the station today I guess.
I received your last letter today dear and was very glad to receive it except that I had to pay 14 to get it as you did not put a stamp on it so that is 14 cents you owe me toots (haha). I’ll take it out of your account.
I have not been doing anything very much since I last wrote you darling. Thursday night I went to the station show and also on Friday. Thursday night K225 was on and Johnny Come Lately with James Cagney was on Friday. Saturday night the station dance was on but Norm, Paul and myself went to our club and played cards and we really had you on my mind. If I was a drinking man I think that i would have got really drunk, but instead I drowned my sorrow in 2 pineapple Sundaes, 2 glasses of milk and a package of cookies, so that wasn’t too bad was it? You get all of that for 15 cents but I would rather be at Rice’s with you like this old times eh dear?
I met Norman Hall this morning, I don’t know if you know him or not. Marg does I think, I don’t know him very well myself but he certainly is fat now, just a Mr 5 by 5, he got married before he came down.
Norm and I are trying to talk one another into when we are to take our leave. I want him to come home with me at New Years and I think the I have him talked into it. Gee but I can’t wait for it to come but the best thing to do is to not think about it and it will go faster.
I wrote my Aunt a letter on Friday and tried to cheer her up, she has got some things together for the baby and from what my Mom says she certainly is looking forward to it. By the way dear have you any ideas for some names we have better get something lined up. I know you asked in your last letter dear. I am so happy when I think of having such a lovely sweet wife and a baby besides what more could a fellow want?
I picked up my bond on Saturday morning dear and I will bring it home at New Years, how much is it that we have ion our bond dear. Mom says I have $150 at home now. Wouldn’t it be swell dear if the war was over by April and we could be together just the three of us, oh well next year really should see the end of it. Pardon me dear one of the boys have have just brought in a smutty little poem and I will read it before I finish………boy was it a honey!!. I will bring a copy of it when I come back home dear and let you read it, if you can handle it.

Hello dear

Well here I am again writing you a letter after supper as this seems to be the only time that I have a chance to be alone with my thoughts and write to you without being disturbed. Beverley has been nothing but a bother lately. She has not been sleeping dear and Pop gets up with her all the time to allow Mom to sleep which she seems to be doing an awful lot of lately. But enough about that.
How have you been keeping dear and have you been thinking about our exciting news and what you want to call the baby. I know we had talked about it before and I am thinking that we should really take some time dear and put some thoughts down on names for the baby. I will leave it up to you dear to think about it and let me know.
I have another medical examination in a month and I think that is going to be a regular thing based on what the doctor has told me and Mother. I think dear that because of what happened before they want to make sure that I am taking all the right precautions and eating my vegetables and getting lots of milk as you would say. So any time that I go to the doctor I will be sure and let you know in my letters and dear there is nothing more to worry about as we have been doing everything right. I also will make sure that I wear low shoes at work until I decide to quit.
I am a little disappointed dear that you have decided to only take New Years as your leave as I was very excited about having you home for Christmas with all the decorations and the tree and the parties that we could go to together. But I think that you made the right choice about the train being too crowded and maybe the train ticket will be not as expensive if you come home after Christmas and then return lately. All that matters to me darling is that I have you here with me and the time of year does not really matter to me dear, but New Years does sound swell for us being together as we have been for the last 6 years.
When I spoke to your folks your Mom told me that she would be making a quilt for the baby and that just tickled me so much as they think so much of me and the fact that we will be expecting a baby. I think that they are very excited to become grandparents just like my Pop is. My Mom is excited for me as well but I think that as she has her own 2 year old this news is a little more overwhelming for her than she is letting me know. Bill dear I think she is having a real hard time with the baby and I do not know what to do as I am now expecting a baby and I will be busy with our own little one but I hope dear that she will be able to be happy for me soon.
I am so glad that you enjoyed the pictures that I sent down to you dear and I too have to agree that Nan has put on some weight since she got married, and I do not think she is in the same way as I am. I think she has been enjoying herself and it is beginning to show on her, but she is as happy as a lark and really is there anything more we could wish for.
Darling, is there anything you wish to do when you get home for the holidays? I am guessing that we will be staying at your folks home and not here where there is too much confusion. I am glad that we will have our own little room, just like when we were down in Halifax and I know your folks will be there as well, but we will be together and we can sleep in and talk all night is we used to, and that will be wonderful don’t you think?
Will you try and write you Aunt soon dear as I think she will need some cheering up as this whole house situation has really got her down. I will leave that up to you but please take a moment and write her a few lines.

Hello Darling;

Well dear I received your very welcome letter yesterday and about time too. The main thing is that there is nothing wrong with you darling. I don’t know why you didn’t receive my letter sooner but you know they hold the mail up here once in a while and i think that was one of those times.
I received my folks letter today and got all the local news and the fact that he is going to be a grandpa and my mother is working on a quilt, isn’t that dandy.
Well darling I am glad to here that the medical examination went ok and let me know in your next letter when the next appointment will be and I just wish that I was there to keep an eye on you dear. You know that I would do anything to be home with you and hold your hand as you went to the doctor, and I promise the next time I will be there.
Ted is certainly a lucky guy to be so near to home again. I really envy him, but then I think if all the boys who would envy me, so it doesn’t seem to be bad then. I guess Marg is pleased but then you never can tell I might get a closer posting sometime, who knows. I am assuming she is going with him to his new posting and not going over to those rotten people.
Thanks again dear for the lovely pictures and including one of yourself and Nan Wilson. Nan seems to be quite a chubby little number now eh? Well its married life that is what it is. Oh darling do I ever wish that I could be home with you for good, this war can’t go on forever and I don’t think I’ll be an old man but he time it is over (HA HA).
I have not done very much since I last wrote you darling. Thursday night I stayed in and washed and did a little reading and was in bed by 10 o’clock. Friday night I went to the station show and saw “Hi Diddle Diddle” it wasn’t too bad. It was about this sailor who had a 48 hour pass to get married, well they got married but they just could not seem to get started on the honeymoon. He certainly wanted to.
Last night I had to work until 12 o’clock. I then had something to eat and went to bed. I went to church this morning and it was a very good service. I’m going to have a nap soon as soon as I finish this and I guess I will take in the station show tonight.
The boys were just asking me to come downtown and take in the free show but I want to get this letter done and a way to you as soon as possible. So I told them to go ahead, I don’t want you to think that I did not write you enough dear because I think of you all the time dear and I would do anything to make you feel bad dear but I didn’t get a single letter for myself dear, of a whole week!
I see that my Mom and Pop are counting the days until I get home and no more than I am dear. I think that I will take New Years dear because the train traffic won’t be so bad then and I’ve got a very sentimental feeling for New Years because we’ve been together every New Years for 5 or 6 years now and I want it to be the same way this year.
Darling you know you will always be beautiful to me no matter what, big, small, young, old. I guess that is what true love does to a person and dear our love is more than a physical attraction. I love you from the very bottom of my heart dear and so we’ll just have to pray that we can be together soon.

Hello darling;

Well here it is Thursday afternoon dear and as yet I have not had any mail since last Saturday. I think that the mail is being held up though because the weather has not been very good lately but I’ve certainly been looking forward to a letter very much though.
I hope that you are feeling OK dear and I am so thankful that you went to the doctor on Saturday like you said you would but I don’t think you would lose your nerve and that is why I was so anxious to receive your letter dear and now my heart is so full as I now know that you are doing OK and that we have so much to look forward to.
Well dear I have not done very much at all since I last wrote you. I’m on duty watch this week and can’t get off the station anyways. I’ve been to a couple of shows this week but I’ve really been taking things easy for my Christmas and New Years leave and darling you cannot be looking forward to it any more than I am because after seeing those lovely pictures that you finally sent down, I want to get home more than ever and they were certainly lovely pictures. I have them pinned up in my locker dear and I see you first thing in the morning and the last thing at night and it certainly keeps my morale up to know that I’ve got such a sweet lovable and nice looking wife waiting at home for me and darling I love you more than anything else in this world so please take real good care of yourself.
Well Bob Hobbs got a posting overseas on Tuesday and he is on his embarkation leave now so he should be pretty close to home right now. He is tickled pink, but you don’t have to worry about me darling because he put in for an overseas posting about 8 months ago and they are the only ones who are getting them.
We have not heard anymore as yet on whether we are going to get Christmas or New Years leave but you can count on me getting home anyway dear for a couple of days at least because I still have those 4 days of annual leave left, but I think we will get 5 days myself.
I don’t know what to do about those underwear for your Pop. I can’t get a box for them on the station and I can’t get off the station to get one so I’m really stuck this week anyway. Norm took some pictures the other day but he sent them home to be developed so when they come back I’ll try and get some home to you darling.
I have not had a letter from my folks for over a week or so, so tell them to start cracking at it eh?!
I hope that Beverley and your Mom and Pop are all fine and tell your Pop that I wouldn’t mind one of his cocktails around Christmas or New Years so he has better get in shape with a real good one.
What are we going to do about Christmas gifts and cards dear? I think that if you think you are able for it you could buy the gifts dear. I can buy Air Force Cards down here and I could send them to anybody that you wish and if you think it would be alright I could say they are from us. I’ll wait until I hear from you dear so let me know what you think.
Gee it will be fun when this is over and we are together again and we have a Christmas tree for our babies dear. I could dress up like Santa Claus, no kidding though darling I have an awful lot of good times to make up to you dear and I am going to dedicate the rest of my life to make you the happiest little wife and mother in this world and so honey loving you more than I could ever put down on paper.
